Not every weight-loss clinic offers the same level of medical care. Here is what to look for when choosing an obesity medicine provider in Pittsburgh, in person or online.
Choosing a weight-loss provider is a health decision. Look for medical training, evidence-based treatment, and a plan that goes beyond a one-time prescription.
1. Check board certification
Obesity medicine is a recognized medical specialty area. Physicians can be certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) or hold other qualifying credentials. You can verify certification through the ABOM website.
2. Confirm licensure
Your provider should be licensed in Pennsylvania. Verify through PALS, the state license lookup.
3. Ask about FDA-approved medications
Ask which medications the clinic prescribes and whether they are FDA-approved for weight management, such as Wegovy (semaglutide), Zepbound (tirzepatide), and Saxenda (liraglutide). Be cautious of compounded products marketed as equivalents. Compounded drugs are not part of our program. See labeling for Wegovy and Zepbound.
4. Look for a full medical evaluation
A good provider reviews your history, medications, and risks before prescribing, and does not promise results.
5. Expect ongoing follow-up
Obesity is a chronic condition. Ask how often you will be seen and how side effects and dose changes are handled.
6. Get clear on costs
Ask for the visit fee, medication costs, and any extras up front. Our visit fee is cash-pay.
7. Consider convenience
Telehealth may suit you if you prefer to avoid commuting across bridges and tunnels or through winter weather. In-person care may suit those needing hands-on evaluation or procedures.
Red flags
- Guaranteed results or "miracle" claims
- Prescribing with no medical history review
- Pressure to buy supplements or packages
- No clear way to reach a clinician with questions
