Wegovy Injection vs Oral Wegovy Pill in Pittsburgh, PA

Wegovy Injection vs Oral Wegovy Pill in Pittsburgh, PA

Wegovy (semaglutide) now comes two ways: a once-weekly injection and a once-daily tablet, often called oral Wegovy. Both contain semaglutide and are FDA-approved for weight management with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. The main differences are how you take them and how the doses are built up.

Which one may suit you

  • If you prefer to avoid needles, the daily tablet may appeal to you, as long as you can follow the morning routine.
  • If you would rather take one dose a week and skip the daily empty-stomach routine, the injection may be easier.
  • Your insurance, pharmacy supply and cash price may decide the question. Ask your pharmacy for current prices.

Both forms were studied in separate clinical trials with different designs, so their results should not be compared number to number. Individual results vary.

Side effects and safety

Both forms share the common stomach-related side effects of semaglutide: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation, mostly during dose increases. Semaglutide labels warn about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in animals, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, dehydration and kidney injury, and low blood sugar when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. Neither is for use in pregnancy. Your physician will review your history before recommending either form.

Questions about Wegovy injection vs the pill

Is oral Wegovy the same as Rybelsus?

No. They contain the same medicine but are different products with different doses and approved uses. Do not substitute one for the other.

Can I take the pill and the injection together?

No. Only one form of semaglutide should be used at a time.

Can I switch between the two?

Some people do, under physician guidance. Do not switch or change doses on your own.
