Zepbound vs Wegovy in Pittsburgh, PA: Which Weight Loss Injection Fits You?

Zepbound (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are both FDA-approved once-weekly injections for weight management. They are different medicines with different labels, and the better fit depends on your health history, how you tolerate side effects, and cost. This guide explains the differences so you can talk them through with a physician.

What the research shows

In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial in adults with obesity, tirzepatide produced an average weight loss of about 20% over 72 weeks, compared with about 14% for semaglutide. These are averages. Individual results vary widely, and the best medication for you also depends on side effects, other health conditions, cost and coverage.

Side effects and safety

The most common side effects of both medicines are stomach-related: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation, mostly during dose increases. Both warn about pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, dehydration and kidney injury, and low blood sugar when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. Neither is for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, or for use in pregnancy. Tirzepatide can make oral birth control pills less effective.

How to decide

  • Your health history: sleep apnea, heart disease, liver disease or type 2 diabetes may favor one option.
  • Your goals and how fast you want to progress.
  • How you tolerate dose increases.
  • Cost and coverage: plans and cash prices differ. See our medication cost guide.

Questions about Zepbound vs Wegovy

Is Zepbound stronger than Wegovy?

In head-to-head research, average weight loss was higher with tirzepatide. That does not make it the better choice for every person.

Can I take both?

No. They are different medicines and should never be combined.

Can I switch from one to the other?

Some people switch under physician guidance. Do not change doses or switch on your own.
